DeGaS-Cold - Column water degassing (cold)

DeGaS-Cold is a column degassing system for removing dissolved oxygen (O₂) from water – designed for use at ambient temperature . The goal is virtually oxygen-free water for stable product quality and reproducible processes . The O₂ content is continuously monitored.


Application

Dissolved oxygen negatively affects flavor stability and shelf life . DeGaS-Cold removes O₂ from water used in the production of:

  • Beer
  • Beer-based mixed drinks

is used.


Description / Operating principle

This is how column degassing works in the process:

  • The water is distributed in the upper part of the column .
  • In the column, tightly packed, thin stainless steel sheets ensure that the water takes many paths as it flows away.

This maximizes the exchange surface area and contact time between water and stripping gas.

  • Strip gas ( CO₂ or N₂ ) is fed in at the bottom of the column and rises in countercurrent to the water.
  • The large partial pressure difference of O₂ drives the oxygen out of the water into the gas phase (Henry's Law) .
  • At the top, the removed oxygen leaves the system along with undissolved CO₂ or N₂ as a gas.
  • The almost oxygen-free water is collected at the bottom of the column.

Optional operation (depending on the version)

To increase performance and to avoid carbonation or nitrogenation of the water, DeGaS-Cold can optionally be used:

  • operate under vacuum
  • and work entirely without stripping gas

This can reduce investment and operating costs .


Process control (Inline O₂)

The O₂ content of the degassed water is constantly monitored. For this purpose, the system is equipped with a highly accurate optical OXYTRANS sensor from Centec.


Further use of the degassed water (optional)

The degassed water can optionally be used for further purposes:

  • be cooled
  • be disinfected with UV light
  • additionally carbonized
