DGS - Membrane water deaeration
DGS is a membrane-based water deaeration system designed to achieve exceptionally low residual oxygen values. The system is based on highly efficient membrane modules, each containing thousands of hydrophobic, gas-permeable hollow-fiber membranes. This creates a very large internal surface area, maximizing the exchange area and contact time between water and gas.
While the strip gas (CO₂ or N₂) is applied on the inside of the hollow fibers, the water flows in countercurrent on the outside. The large partial pressure difference of O₂ drives the oxygen out of the water through the gas-permeable membranes. Inside the membranes, the oxygen is removed together with the strip gas. This fundamental physical principle is described by Henry’s law.
The DGS system requires only a minimum of energy and strip gas.
Application
Dissolved oxygen has negative effects on flavor stability and shelf life. The DGS deaeration system removes O₂ from water used in the production of:
- beer
- beer-mix beverages
The system is compact and easy to expand.
System Design & Function
Thanks to its modular design, the system can be easily adapted to the required:
- capacity by arranging membranes in parallel
- residual oxygen level by arranging membranes in series
The O₂ content of the deaerated water is continuously monitored. For this purpose, the system is equipped with a highly accurate optical OXYTRANS sensor for process control.
The nearly oxygen-free water can optionally be:
- cooled
- disinfected with UV light
- carbonated
Because hollow-fiber membranes are sensitive to particles in the water, the DGS system includes special prefilters.
Highlights
- Highly accurate OXYTRANS sensor for process control
- Easy to expand and low strip gas consumption
- Customer-specific modular design with standard PLC
- Frame-mounted for easy installation and commissioning
