DeCarbonator - Decarbonization & Carbonization
The decarbonizer is a membrane system for continuously adjusting the CO₂ content in the product – including targeted reduction . Simultaneously, the oxygen (O₂) content is reduced. The system is designed for stable operation with a constantly monitored CO₂ level and regulates the CO₂ flow directly and fully automatically .
Application
The decarbonizer is designed for the continuous adjustment and, in particular, the reduction of the CO₂ content in:
- Beer
- Beer-based mixed drinks
A precisely defined and consistent CO₂ content is a crucial quality characteristic for carbonated beverages.
Principle – Membrane technology (hollow fibers)
CO₂ adjustment is achieved via highly efficient membrane modules :
- Each module contains thousands of hydrophobic , gas-permeable hollow fiber membranes .
- The large membrane surface maximizes the exchange area and contact time between product and gas.
- CO₂ is applied to the inside of the hollow fibers, the product flows countercurrently on the outside between the fibers.
- Depending on the CO₂ partial pressure difference, CO₂ migrates through the membrane:
– from the membrane into the product (increase CO₂)
– or from the product into the membrane (reducing CO₂)
- The underlying principle is described by "Henry's Law" .
Measurement & automatic control (CO₂ / O₂)
- The CO₂ content in the carbonized product is constantly monitored.
- The system is equipped with a highly accurate CARBOTEC sensor from Centec for process control .
- Based on the in-line measurement, the carbon dioxide flow is adjusted immediately and fully automatically .
- The O₂ content is measured using proven optical OXYTRANS sensor technology from Centec.
