REVOTEC - Reverse Osmosis
Reverse osmosis (RO) is the reverse of natural osmosis. When a semipermeable membrane is placed between pure water and water containing dissolved ions (salts), osmosis begins. The membrane's pores allow only H₂O to pass through, but not salts, suspended solids, bacteria, or larger molecules. Due to the different concentrations on either side of the membrane, osmotic pressure causes the pure water to pass through, diluting the solution on the impure side. This continues until osmotic equilibrium (the same concentration on both sides) is reached. In the REVOTEC system, this process is reversed. To separate pure water from water containing dissolved salts and solids, pressure is applied to the impure water. When the applied pressure exceeds the natural osmotic pressure, pure water will pass through the membrane to the side where the pure water is located. The purified water (permeate) is essentially free of all impurities. This cross-flow technology minimizes fouling of membrane elements by rapidly removing the contaminated water (concentrate). Depending on the level of contamination in the raw water, pretreatment may be necessary to prevent deposits and chemical stress from oxidizing agents such as chlorine. To precisely achieve the desired water quality and increase the system's capacity, permeate and raw water can be blended.
